Rare Breeding Bird Tours Summer 2008

The Rare Breeding Bird Tours take place during June & July and are probably one of the most exciting single day's bird watching we can experience in Britain during the summer months.

The tour leader meets the group at 9 am and can chauffeur three people to each site with others following in their own car at a discounted price, the group return to the meeting point at 5 pm. Lunch is included with the tour and we use a good quality public house or hotel that provides a light meal.

The cost of this tour is £50.00 per person and includes chauffeuring from the meeting point to bird watching sites and lunch (not drinks), if using your own car a discount will be given.

Golden Oriole Tour

The sound and site of a male Golden Oriole is very exciting and good views of these birds are normally difficult to achieve. During the last few years The company’s summer tours were successful on most dates and included several days where numerous birds were seen including excellent views of two male birds for more than an hour.

The tour begins from Swaffham and the morning is spent watching Golden Orioles. We stop for lunch at a local public house before continuing the bird watching visiting sites for Stone Curlew, Woodlark and Little Owl. The final part of the afternoon is spent on the edge of Thetford Forest searching for Goshawk, Hobby, Firecrest, Crossbill & Hawfinch.

Montagu's Harrier & Honey Buzzard Tour

Raptors have a special place in many bird watchers hearts and the Montagu’s Harrier and Honey Buzzard are two of the most exciting to watch. During the past few years the company has had a high success rate with the Montagu’s Harrier though only saw the Honey Buzzards on 60% of tours. This was due to the birds having failed unfortunately to breed.

The tour begins from Fakenham looking for Montagu’s Harrier in the morning & Honey Buzzard in the afternoon. Other raptors usually seen include Marsh Harrier, Hobby, Kestrel, Sparrowhawk and Common Buzzard. Occasionally we see Goshawk, Red Kite and Osprey.

The Tour

During the Rare Breeding Bird Tours no species are disturbed and The Bird I.D Company abide by the Bird Watchers Code at all times and ask our clients to do the same. We do not visit close to the nesting sites of rare species and report any suspicious activities in the areas of rare or scarce breeding birds. The birds welfare must always come first.

The tour group meet at a central and safe parking area, in either Swaffham or Fakenham, depending on the tour you join. The tour leader then chauffeurs the group to the sites during the day, returning the group to the car park in the afternoon. Lunch is provided and is included in the cost of the tour. We can cater for any dietary need within reason, please indicate your requirements on the booking form. The tour group is normally kept to a maximum of six clients.

Our Rare Breeding Bird Tours are ideal for bird watchers keen to see and study some of our rarest and most exciting birds. Our success rate with the species involved is extremely high, though dependent at times on the weather.
